It might be known as the ‘most wonderful time of the year’, but the festive season can be a difficult time for those who’ve experienced the loss of a loved one.

To mark National Grief Awareness Week, we wanted to remind you that there are organisations out there that can support you through a bereavement, and plenty you can do to help others who might be grieving.

Created by The Good Grief Trust, National Grief Awareness Week runs from 2 to 8 December and aims to raise awareness of grievance support that’s available in the UK. It also aims to help normalise grief by getting people to talk about it. You can learn more here.

In addition to The Good Grief Trust, these charities also offer bereavement support:

AtaLoss – helps people find support and wellbeing.

Cruse Bereavement Care – provides a range of support services.

Samaritans – offers emotional support to those experiencing despair, distress, or suicidal feelings.

Things you can do to help others

If you know someone who has experienced a bereavement, the little things can often make a big difference:

  • Take the time to check on them.
  • Stop by for a chat and a cuppa.
  • Ask them to join you for a walk and talk.
